Question #1. If I was born deaf, and later on I am wearing a hearing aid in right ear but total deaf in other ear does that make me 1/2 deaf? With my explain more deep is when I feel that hearing aid help me hear and talk very well in my right ear it sort of make me think I am hearing.  I think hearing aid been helpful in my life without it I would feel awful moody being full deaf in both ear.

  1. I would not be without my hearing aids either. How you rate yourself deaf wise, is your own personal choice. Don't let anyone make you feel its wrong as this is something I have come across myself, and did make myself feel down.

But when our hearing aids breakdown on us, then without them, we are deaf.

I consider myself deaf, even when wearing hearing aids, as I can still struggle with conversations, or not hear people, unless they get my attention first.

Also saying I am deaf rather than hard of heraring as I used to years ago, I find I get the response I need, i.e. speaking to me by facing me, not covering their mouth or looking away.

Where when I labelled myself hard of hearing, I was treated as hearing person.

  2. nice response it really help sometime when I walk by some stranger and they starting talking to me but I can still keep walking away like I didnt hear anything so something like that make me look bad because I was playing deaf but wait a minute I am deaf anyway. This make me wonder if I am suppose to be hearing or deaf.

  3. I agree with Liz, it's how we rate ourselves deaf wise. I consider myself hard of hearing with and without hearing aids because I can actually still use the phone with out it in one of my ear w/ amplification, even though I'm deaf in my other ear without hearing aid.

  4. Candy, thank you for posting a comment here. Yes, Liz is correct she make good points. When I was younger, I was told if I was born deaf then I am always deaf. When you born hearing, and turn out you have hearing loss that mean you are hard of hearing. Many time we face half and half so it make our life interesting. I used to talk on the phone, I had to ask for repeat a lot and sometime I misunderstand the other person. Turning my hearing aid on T which block the background noise that was really nice. Hearing aid is a wonderful tools to use!

  5. I have been known, what seamt to others as walking away, when they spoke. They thought I was ignorant, till they realised as I was deaf. I wasn't wearing Ear Gear then, so my hearing aids were not visible to them, as they are now.

Hearing aids are wonderful things to assist us with listening. But like others sometimes find it hard to understand because they are not deaf, that they don't give our hearing back like it used to be. It just assists.
